In the eastern part of Indonesia, specifically in West Papua, many families still live simply from what nature provides. They grow vegetables, process root crops, and make do with what is available around them.
Behind this simplicity, however, many children still do not receive proper education and enough protein intake from an early age. It is not because families do not want to give their children the best, but because uncertain income forces them to prioritize basic needs such as rice and instant noodles.
As a result, children in Papua often have sweet tea and sweet potatoes for breakfast. Some children have even been diagnosed with malnutrition.
Because of you, OBI was able to reach children in West Papua by bringing the Garden in School program to four Super5 Early Childhood Education Centers: PAUD Dock Prafi, PAUD Imanuel Mbrey Uly, PAUD Makarismos, and PAUD Wampasi.
Each PAUD received 75 laying hens, a chicken coop, chicken feed for the first three months, and mustard green seeds on April 21–22, 2026. Through your support, the schools can begin developing simple gardens and raising laying hens to help meet the children’s nutritional needs.
Through school gardens and the care of laying hens, children can enjoy additional nutrition from vegetables and eggs. At the same time, parents also learn simple ways to grow vegetables and raise livestock on a household scale. This program is also designed to support school independence.
The harvest from the gardens and the eggs are not only used to support the children’s nutrition, but also have the potential to become an additional source of income for PAUD operations.
We believe that every support you give means a new opportunity for children in West Papua to grow healthier and have a better future.
