OBI Establishes Resilient Communities and Schools Against Disasters!

Amid the high risk of natural disasters in Indonesia, Obor Berkat Indonesia (OBI) has launched a new initiative through the Emergency Preparedness Training Project. This project serves as a preventive effort to train and equip resilient communities and schools to face disasters effectively.

Thanks to the support of our partners, we have successfully conducted Emergency Preparedness Training in three regions: North Jakarta, Bekasi, and Bandung, up until June 2024. A total of 114 participants, including teachers, school staff, and church community members, took part. In collaboration with local Disaster Management Agencies (BPBD), these trainings were well-received, especially by disaster survivors and community leaders, as they gained a deeper understanding of the importance of disaster mitigation.

Here are some testimonials from OBI Emergency Preparedness Training participants:

“As a survivor of the Aceh earthquake and tsunami on December 26, 2004, I realize how important this knowledge and skillset is for Indonesian society. Through this training, we are provided with the essential knowledge, understanding, and skills needed to face unexpected natural disasters with maximum readiness.” – Yohanes Wun, training participant in North Jakarta.

“The hands-on simulations in this training provided valuable experience, especially for someone like me who has experienced an earthquake.” – Florita Indah, training participant in Bekasi.

“This training provides an understanding of our response if there is a disaster. I will share this simulation with the church congregation so that if a disaster strikes while we are gathered, the congregation will not panic.” – Hisar Tambun, church community leader at IFGF in Cimahi, Bandung.

Our target in 2024 is to train 200 communities and schools to independently manage disaster preparedness. We believe this project will come to fruition through your compassion for others.
