Preparing Volunteers to Respond When Disaster Strikes

Indonesia faces a wide range of disaster risks that require preparedness and cooperation. To contribute to disaster response efforts, Obor Berkat Indonesia (OBI) equips its personnel through Indonesia Disaster Relief Team (IDRT) training. This training prepares a responsive, skilled team committed to integrity, ready to provide assistance and work together to serve affected communities.

The training took place over three full days, from August 31 to September 2, 2026, with 40 registered participants. It combined leadership lessons, hands-on field operations, and simulations of situations in which multiple hazards occur simultaneously or trigger further disasters. Through this approach, participants practiced applying their knowledge in settings that reflected real-world conditions.

Topics included personal and team safety, first aid, rapid assessments of community needs, coordination, and situation reporting. Participants also learned about aid distribution principles, addressing the needs of vulnerable groups, and maintaining integrity in humanitarian service. Each participant’s leadership behavior was also observed to assess their ability to respond to situations and work as part of a team.

Evaluation results showed that participants gained a stronger understanding after completing the training. Their understanding of disaster response principles and procedures also became more consistent across the group.

For participants, the simulations were among the most memorable experiences, offering a practical picture of what responding to a disaster involves.

Through IDRT training, preparedness is built before help is needed. The goal is for participants to respond with the skills, leadership, and compassion needed to serve communities facing disasters.
