Two Decades On, Building Resilience Through Disaster Preparedness in Nias

Thanks to your support, we continue to equip communities with disaster preparedness training. One such effort took place on Friday, March 7, 2025, in remembrance of the 20th anniversary of the Nias earthquake.

The training was held at OBI School Fodo in Gunungsitoli and attended by 350 participants—200 adults and 150 elementary students from various schools.

Organised in collaboration with OBI, the BPBD (Regional Disaster Management Agency), and the Gunungsitoli Department of Education, the training aimed to strengthen disaster resilience by improving awareness among students and teachers.

Participants learned key topics: what earthquakes are, how to stay safe, and how to give first aid. The session also included live simulations—such as ducking under tables and evacuating to safe zones.

Each student received a “Disaster Preparedness Kit” including a whistle, flashlight, mask, and other essentials. The atmosphere was enthusiastic, with students and teachers expressing greater confidence in responding to earthquakes.

Beyond training, this initiative empowers children to become agents of change, bringing preparedness to their schools and homes.

Thank you, OBI partners! Your support has made a lasting impact toward a safer future in Gunungsitoli, South Nias.
