From Struggles to Solutions: How Titus and His Family Found Relief

Through our generous support, Obor Berkat Indonesia (OBI) continues to provide clean water assistance to communities struggling with access to clean water in Indonesia. The construction assistance of Rainwater Harvesting System (RHS) provided to 34 recipients in Batombawo Village, Nias Islands, has transformed the difficulties faced by children and their families into ease. One such impact is experienced by Titus (11 years) and his family.

For his family, clean water was an essential need that was difficult to fulfill. Their modest life couldn’t afford a water reservoir, so they were forced to dig the ground to collect rainwater. But during the dry season, this reservoir would also run dry.

To meet the household’s water needs, Titus and his brother were assigned to fetch water from a river deep in the forest. They made this journey every morning and evening, carrying 5-liter jerry cans filled with water. Sometimes, the muddy, rocky roads would cause them to slip and spill the water, forcing them to go back to the river to refill.

This daily task often left him exhausted, and leading him to sigh, “When will we no longer have to fetch water like this?”

When OBI’s Rainwater Harvesting System Helped

Titus and his family were overjoyed to hear that OBI was providing the Rainwater Harvesting System (RHS) assistance. He was selected as one of the recipients from the School of Life CBN Learning Center, a partnership with OBI, to benefit from this program. In August 2023, the rainwater collection system was set up and ready to operate, allowing families to meet their water needs everyday.

Titus is immensely grateful, as his prayers were answered, and the heavy burden of fetching water from the forest is now over. Although they still help their parents with the rubber plantation or search for stones in the river to sell, the fatigue has lessened because they no longer must fetch water twice a day.

“Thank you, OBI. Now we don’t get tired anymore fetching water from the river, and we can use that time to study,” says Titus with gratitude.

Currently, OBI continues to distribute assistance to communities struggling with clean water access in various regions across Indonesia. By the end of this year, a well in Sumba is under construction, and 35 Rainwater Harvesting Systems are being built in Nias. Please continue praying that these efforts bring lasting benefits to every recipient.
