Initial Psychological Support Training for Communities and Schools, Building Resilience Against Disasters
The risk of disasters such as fires, earthquakes, landslides and floods is a constant threat to the areas of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi (Jabodetabek). For this reason, Obor Berkat Indonesia (OBI) has stepped forward to support communities and schools through disaster preparedness program.
Together with you, OBI has been working to create disaster resilient communities and schools by conducting disaster preparedness training in Jabodetabek and West Java since April 2024. On 26 October 2024, OBI once again conducted an initial psychological support training for communities and schools in the Jabodetabek area. This training was held at Pentecost Isa Almasih Church in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta.
The objective of the training is to equip teachers to provide psychological and psychosocial support to disaster survivors. The training, which was enthusiastically attended by 45 participants, began with a presentation by OBI’s Disaster Relief Program Manager, Adelina Simatupang. Participants then engaged in group discussions and actively practiced the knowledge they had gained together.

One participant, Mrs Jojor, who is a teacher, found the training very useful in dealing with disaster situations that may occur in the school. Before, she did not know how to support students in the event of a fire in her school. Now she knows what to do after a disaster.
Mrs Jojor said, “This training is very useful for me to apply in school, as it helps me to identify students who are disaster survivors and provide initial psychological support as shared in this training”.

She hopes this training can continue to be held in schools on a regular basis. In this way, teachers will understand the importance of providing initial psychological support to disaster survivors, especially during earthquakes.
