A Door of Hope for Debora and Dozens of Cleft Lip Children

Helping children from underprivileged families who are born with cleft lip conditions is one of the focus areas of Obor Berkat Indonesia (OBI). This year, our target is to provide free surgery to 25 children in greatest need. One of them is Debora (11 years old) from Sabu Island, East Nusa Tenggara.

Thanks to your support, Debora successfully underwent palate surgery on Monday, July 29, 2024. Previously, Debora had her first surgery in November 2023. After six months of recovery, she received further support for follow-up surgery to close the remaining gap in her palate.

You have changed Debora’s life forever! This surgery would have been impossible given her family’s financial situation, as they struggle to meet even their daily needs. Her father is a daily laborer tapping palm sap, while her mother tends a small vegetable garden at home to supplement their daily consumption. With these limitations, taking Debora to the hospital seemed an impossibility.

After the surgery, “Debora has started to socialize with her friends,” said Dikson, Debora’s brother. The inferiority complex that used to make her shut herself off from her friends has now turned into confidence. The once-feared face now beams with a smile.

The same joy is felt by her family because this free surgery has transformed Debora’s life. “We thank OBI so much for helping us through this surgery. May God bless you,” said Dikson.

OBI partners, we continue to strive to provide free surgeries for children in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and North Sumatra this month. Please support us in prayer so that these surgeries can help the children who need them most.
