Life Transformation of Farmers in North Sumatra: The Impact of Agricultural Assistance from Obor Berkat Indonesia

Through the provision of rice seeds, pest control, weeds and fertilizers, OBI has not only assisted ten farmers in need, but also accompanied them throughout the cultivation process. OBI’s presence became increasingly vital when the long dry season threatened their harvests in early 2024. However, thanks to the relentless motivation and prayers from the OBI team, rain finally came, saving the rice crops that were almost failing.
One of the most moving stories was the struggle of Mrs. Martina, a 39-year-old widow from Batubara. Facing bitter reality after her husband passed away from brain cancer six years ago, Mrs. Martina has been struggling to support her two children solely on her income as a farmer and farm laborer. A life full of loans and debts had become part of Mrs. Martina’s daily routine, especially to pay the rental of farmland.
However, since receiving assistance from OBI, Mrs. Martina is no longer burdened by debt. The quality rice seeds, pest control, and fertilizers provided by OBI relieved her from financial burdens after the harvest, allowing her to focus all efforts on plant care. With extraordinary spirit and perseverance, Mrs. Martina successfully harvested 2200 kilograms (about 4850.16 lb) of rice from a 10-chain of land, which she sold for Rp 6500 per kilogram. The income from this sale not only sufficiently met her family’s daily needs but also enabled her to pay off her debts and as capital for the next planting season.
